It’s the time of the year when families gather. As much as we look forward to seeing everyone (and the delicious food!), we can’t help but recognize those sometimes awkward situations that come along with it. Don’t worry, you’re not alone – we feel you. So we’ve come up with 8 ways to help you embrace those awkward situations.

1. Be Genuinely Interested

People can become more interesting if you’re genuinely interested and invested in them. When was the last time you earnestly cared about the well-being of that distant relative of yours? Who knows, you might find that you actually have more things in common. When you see something beautiful in someone, tell them. It may take seconds to say, but for them it could last a lifetime.

2. Take A Genuine Interest In Yourself

The best thing to do is not to fight the tide. Let it come. When someone asks you a personal question that you’re not ready to answer, perhaps the best thing to do is to embrace the opportunity to ask yourself why you feel that way. Take it as an opportunity to reflect on yourself and gain advice from others. Who know, you might actually see the situation from a whole new perspective!

3. Be Excited

People naturally gravitate towards the life of the party. Surely you remember that uncle with the magic tricks. Have you done, seen, heard, or even bought anything interesting recently? Share your adventures or recent discovery, and remember that enthusiasm is contagious. Show them photographs if you have them with you, or better still, show them the real thing. We think the Sitpack and the Magic Coin Pouch make for pretty neat party tricks 😉

4. Ask For Their Story

People love telling stories – it’s how we connect. The next time someone asks you about a significant other, ask them how they met theirs instead! You’ll also get to know them better 😉

5. Involve Others

You’re probably not the only person who feels misplaced when the extended family gathers. This is especially true for families that rarely get together. Be the one to actively engage others, and soon you’ll go from awkward silence to a group chat. Start with a neutral topic or a throwback and dig up some of those good old memories.

6. Focus On Making New Great Memories

Instead of thinking about how to get out of the situation, remind yourself that this year would never come again. This moment cannot be duplicated. Make memories with your relatives. Find something you genuinely like about them and offer them a compliment. Take photos, go live on Facebook, share stories on Snapchat, post overly filtered photos on Instagram. Make the moment truly enjoyable for yourself and others.

Pro Tip: It helps if your photo taking device is a flying selfie droid – because we could always use that extra hand 😉

7. Immerse Yourself In The Hustle And Bustle

Help out around the house. Everyone loves a good host. Soak in the energy of the people cooking in the kitchen, help them out and learn a few family recipes. Be in awe at the way your skilled relatives cook without the need for fanciful new-age kitchen gadgets, or maybe tell them about some space saving spoons or juicers that don’t need cleaning.

Or if you prefer to stay out of the kitchen, take charge of drinks, help out with the little ones, or bond with the older folks. There’s always much to do, and hey, why not enjoy it right?

Fizzics Waytap – Untap the full taste of beer with science. Sound waves convert the beer’s carbonation into densely compacted, uniform Micro-Foam bubbles unlocking that fresh-from-the-tap taste.

*Pro Tip 2: They do say that alcohol relaxes and bonds people. What could be better than fresh tasting beer?

8. Take Control Of Your Feelings

Acknowledge your feelings, but accept that there is an alternative. You can choose to interpret the ‘awkward’ situation in a different way. Remember that Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” It may not be inferiority, but it is true that no one can make you feel what you feel without you allowing it to happen. You’re responsible for how you feel and you can change that.

We hope these 8 tips were helpful to you. If you happen to try any one of them, let us know how it worked out for you! If you have more tips for others, please share them too. Happy Chinese New Year to those of you who are celebrating it. And for those of you who aren’t, we hope you have a good break and enjoy those pineapple tarts anyway!
